On the Back
For centuries, Tibetan Buddhist contemplatives have directly explored consciousness through carefully honed, rigorous techniques of meditation.
Professor Wallace explains the methods and experiences of those Tibetan practitioners and compares these with investigations of consciousness by Western scientists and philosophers. The Bridge of Quiescence includes a translation of a classic discussion by the fifteenth-century Tibetan contemplative, Tsongkhapa, of methods for developing exceptionally high degrees of attentional stability and clarity.
“Stop in your tracks—this is an extraordinary book! Wallace has important information for you and clear instructions on how to proceed. This applies to psychologists, philosophers, cognitive neuroscientists, religious professionals, and religious seekers—all those who are seriously interested in human consciousness.”
— DAVID GALIN, M.D. University of California San Francisco School of Medicine
“a spectacular cross-cultural presentation of techniques for achieving meditative calm.”
— JEFFREY HOPKINS University of Virginia
“the most important book on Buddhist meditation to appear in over a decade . . . a lucid introduction to Tsongkhapa’s thought and to basic techniques and issues in Buddhist meditation, but also a cogent plea for Western cognitive studies to reclaim introspection—including meditation practice—as an indispensable empirical tool for understanding the nature and possibilities of human consciousness.”
— ROGER JACKSON Carleton College
