On the Back

“Robert Thurman is a living treasure, one of today’s most provocative spiritual thinkers.”
—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

Modern life in the rich, industrialized Western world is marked by cynicism—wars are the landmarks in our timelines of history, and our fellow citizens are often viewed as commodities or competitors. But in Tibet, remote and materially undeveloped, the quest for happiness is far less frantic—and far more successful.

What is found in the “enlightenment factories” of Tibet (and earlier, India) that creates such a spirit of fulfillment and joy? And how, in their own quiet, earthshaking way, have these ideas come to change the rest of the world, and to promise an even better tomorrow?

With insight and enthusiasm, Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman explores the minds and methods of the “enlightenment scientists” who have followed in the footsteps of the Buddha, offering us not only an intelligent, practical primer, but a wide-ranging look at the course of our civilization and a set of directions that can alter that course, in a revolution so grand and profound it can come only from within.

“Part spiritual memoir, part philosophical treatise and part religious history, Thurman’s book is a passionate declaration of the possibilities of renewing the world.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A renowned scholar of Tibetan Buddhism issues a popular appeal to the West to refashion its inner life according to Buddhist enlightenment teachings. . . . Thurman makes an impassioned and engaging guide.”
Kirkus Reviews

Named as one of Time magazine’s 25 Most Influential People of 1997, Robert A. F. Thurman, Ph.D., has been a college professor and writer for thirty years, and holds the first endowed chair in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in America. Cofounder and president of the nonprofit organization Tibet House New York, he was the first Western Tibetan Buddhist monk, and has shared a thirty-five-year friendship with the Dalai Lama.
