The words of advice collected in this book are part of the ancient tradition of religious texts known as terma, "hidden treasures" that were hidden in secret places during the first spread of Buddhism in Tibet in the ninth century, to be rediscovered by future generations.
These texts—many of them hidden by the great master Padmasambhava and revealed by extraordinary tertöns (treasure revealers)—were meant to be revealed at appropriate times to benefit future generations.
This book is based on the terma teachings of Padmasambhava that were revealed in the 14th century by Karma Lingpa. These terma texts were translated from a sacred language called dakini script, and concealed for centuries in various locations—on a cliff, a rock, under a riverbed, or within the sky. The texts, full of brilliant imagery, short, direct instructions referring to the three levels of Buddhist practice: Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana.
Among the texts is a general reminder, "The Light of Wisdom," as well as other instructions that remain as relevant today. The book includes a commentary by Ven. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and a short biography of Padmasambhava by Jamgon Kongtrul.
Padmasambhava—also known as Guru Rinpoche or Padmakara—is renowned as the teacher who established Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet and is the founder of the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
