The topic is particularly poignant as this was the last teaching Lama gave in the West; he passed away some five months later. But here he was his usual boisterous, punchy, direct, funny, loving and compassionate self, treating the topic of death in his incomparable light yet serious way. Lama Zopa Rinpoche also attended the seminar and gave a teaching on cultivating a peaceful mind, which we have included as an introductory talk, and since in London the previous year Lama had given a public talk on transference of consciousness, we thought it fitting to include that as well. In 1959 he fled the Chinese oppression and continued his study and practice in Tibetan refugee camps in India. In 1969, with his chief disciple, Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, he began teaching Buddhism to Westerners at their Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal, and in 1974, at the invitation of their international students, the Lamas began traveling the world to spread the Dharma.
